How-to Guide

How to Spot Patterns in Glucose Readings

One glucose reading is a moment. A week of readings, read together, is a pattern.

Medical disclaimer: Target ranges are individual. This guide explains how to read your own log — always act on treatment changes with your diabetes team or GP.

Why patterns matter more than any single point

A single high glucose reading can mean a dozen things — a bigger meal, stress, illness, a slightly late dose. A pattern — say, consistently high readings two hours after dinner — points to something specific and actionable. Treatment decisions are made from patterns, not individual numbers.

What affects a single reading

  • Timing relative to meals — fasting, pre-meal, post-meal readings aren’t directly comparable
  • Illness, stress and poor sleep, all of which can raise readings temporarily
  • Unusual exercise or a missed medication

This is exactly why context — noting what the reading followed — matters as much as the number itself.

How to actually read a trend

Group readings by context first — all fasting readings together, all post-dinner readings together — rather than scanning them chronologically. A rising fasting trend over two weeks is a different signal than one spike after a birthday dinner, and grouping is what makes that difference visible.

Organizing readings so the pattern shows itself

Log each reading in MedKeep with its context — fasting, before or after a meal — and out-of-range entries are flagged automatically. Reviewing the member dashboard weekly, rather than reacting to each entry, is where the pattern becomes visible. See the full routine in the blood sugar tracker guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my blood sugar trend is a problem?

Look at readings grouped by context — fasting, before meals, after meals — over at least a week or two, rather than any single number. A consistent shift in one group is more meaningful than one high reading.

What affects a single glucose reading?

Meal timing and size, stress, illness, sleep and exercise can all shift a reading. That’s why noting the context alongside the number matters as much as the value itself.

Can MedKeep help me see glucose patterns over time?

Yes. Log each reading with its context in the member’s Vitals section — out-of-range entries are flagged automatically, and the dashboard makes weekly review straightforward.
